Ashanti Presbytery holds 15 synod with renewed call for care for environment

The Ashanti Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church is urging the government to regulate mining. They want to stop illegal environmental activities.

The Church condemned the slow response to illegal mining. They highlighted its dangers to health and ecosystems.

During their 15th Synod, the Presbytery focused on environmental advocacy. They aim to promote sustainable development.

Rev. Christopher Mawunyo-Nyonyo, Acting Synod Moderator, called for partnerships against illegal mining. He emphasized that this issue threatens Ghana’s natural environment.

“We support calls for a ban on illegal mining,” he said. “It harms our health, environment, and future generations.”

He urged Christians to speak out against pollution and climate change. The Church should advocate for policies that protect the environment.

Congregants must partner with organizations for sustainable projects like reforestation and renewable energy.

The Ashanti Presbytery celebrated its 15th Synod at EPCG Divine Grace Parish in Amakom. The theme was “Care for Creation; the Task and Mission of the Church.”

This theme reminds Christians of their duty to care for God’s creation.

The church brought together leaders and congregants from across the region. They reflected on their evangelical journey and responsibilities as a church.

Rev. Mawunyo-Nyonyo stressed their duty towards creation care. He quoted the Bible's command to “till and keep” the garden.

He reminded them that creation is a sacred trust, not just a resource. Christians must be mindful stewards of both earth and its inhabitants.

“As Christians, we must respond urgently to this crisis,” he said. Human activities have caused environmental degradation and climate change.

The Church has an important role in caring for God’s creation.

For 2025, the Presbytery Executive Council plans training for Catechists in Kumasi. This will serve both Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Presbyteries.

Divine Grace Parish has also set aside land for a new Presbytery Secretariat. This will support regional pastoral work.
