Asiedu Nketia warns NDC presidential hopefuls to focus on governance, not 2028 ambitions

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a warning to party members. He urged them to set aside their ambitions for the 2028 presidential slot. Instead, he wants them to focus on governance.

During an interview on Accra 100.5 FM on April 15, 2025, Mr. Nketia expressed concerns about premature leadership contests. He warned that such distractions could undermine the party's goals under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

“We are a party in government,” he stated. “We must deliver on the mandate Ghanaians gave us in December 2024.” He emphasized that any distraction would hurt both performance and chances in 2028.

Mr. Nketia noted that internal competition for the flagbearer position is unnecessary right now. He said, “The time will come when we open nominations.” For now, he insists they have work to do.

He stressed the need to restore the country after what he called the “rot” left by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). If the party performs well, choosing a flagbearer for 2028 will be easier.

Asiedu Nketia encouraged all party members to focus on fulfilling promises. He believes that if the government performs well, discussions about succession will happen naturally without conflict in coming years.
