Asset Declaration: Appointees must follow rules or lose benefits – Kojo Asante

Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante is the Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana. He supports President John Dramani Mahama’s ultimatum to appointees. These appointees have not declared their assets.

Dr. Asante highlighted the need for strict accountability in public office. His comments followed President Mahama’s directive during the Code of Conduct launch. The President set a final deadline of May 7, 2025, for compliance with asset declaration laws.

Failure to meet this deadline will result in immediate dismissal. This directive follows an earlier missed deadline of March 31 by some appointees. It is part of the administration's commitment to transparency and curbing corruption.

On the Citi Breakfast Show, Dr. Asante stressed that public office seekers must follow rules. They should declare their assets before taking office. He stated, “There has to be some consequence.”

He emphasized that if individuals want appointments, they must adhere to accountability rules. Protecting public interest and funds is essential.

Dr. Asante noted that asset declaration obligations extend beyond politicians. According to Act 550, many individuals must declare their assets too. This includes anyone whose income matches a civil service director's salary.

The goal is for those with power or authority to declare their assets. This ensures they do not abuse their positions for personal gain.
