Mr. Miracles Aboagye, an aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, spoke about asset declaration. He emphasized that it was a priority during former President Nana Akufo-Addo's administration. This comes as many praise President John Mahama for promoting transparency.
Aboagye reacted to an investigative report by The Fourth Estate on JoyNews' Newsfile. The report revealed that some current government appointees did not declare their assets before taking office. He defended the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government's record on this issue.
He stated that former President Akufo-Addo took personal responsibility for asset declarations. Aboagye claimed he played a direct role in ensuring compliance among appointees.
He said, "What the President has done is nothing new." He noted that under Akufo-Addo, appointees were required to declare assets, even if it wasn't publicized. Aboagye coordinated the receipts for all MMDCEs across the country.
His comments come as many Ghanaians commend President Mahama's efforts against corruption. The current administration has received praise for verifying compliance with asset declaration laws among officials.
However, Aboagye challenges the idea that Mahama is setting a new standard. He believes the NPP government also prioritized integrity but without much media attention.
He added, "The only difference is there are cameras now." According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo insisted on seeing receipts from appointees.
