A canoe trip by five children on the Ochi River ended tragically. On May 6, 2025, 12-year-old Kojo Adu, known as Joe, drowned while saving his friends.
The group included three siblings and a nine-year-old paddler from Amoanda. They were searching for avocados to sell when their canoe became unstable.
As panic spread, Kojo helped three children swim to safety. His brave actions cost him his life.
Kojo was pronounced dead at the Assin Ochiso health facility. The other children, aged six to nine, are receiving treatment at a hospital.
Locals heard the children's cries and rushed to help. They managed to rescue the surviving kids. Kojo's body was later recovered from the river.
Grieving parents Ama Ninaa and Kwabena Asaane joined residents in mourning. They called on local authorities and MPs Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for action.
They urged the construction of a footbridge over the river. Residents believe that a safe crossing is essential for protecting lives—especially those of children.
