The Assurances Committee of Parliament is committed to holding government officials accountable. They aim to ensure that promises made to the public are fulfilled. The committee will work without partisan influences.
During a workshop in Koforidua on May 17, Chairman Dominic Nitiwul spoke about their mission. He is also the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla. Nitiwul assured the public that their work will be professional and unbiased.
“We intend to go after those who make assurances,” he said. Most assurances come from appointees representing the executive branch, including the president. Nitiwul emphasized that this is not a witch-hunt.
The committee's goal is to ensure promises by government members are honored. They will monitor actions taken by appointees in the executive branch. To maintain transparency, they plan regular public sittings starting in July.
Both ministers and opposition MPs will be questioned about their promises. Nitiwul confirmed that the committee aims to be visible and accessible to the public.
Alhaji Muhammad Bawah Braimah, Ranking Member of the Assurances Committee, also spoke at the workshop. He represents Ejura-Sekyedumase in Parliament. Braimah stressed that they will operate in the interest of Ghanaians.
He stated that resources entrusted to public officials must be managed properly. The committee aims for good governance and will remain non-partisan in its efforts.
