At dawn they hunt: The sacred ritual of Aboakyer’s deer chase

At dawn on the first Saturday of May, Winneba wakes up. The sound of drums and chants fills the air.

This day marks the start of the Aboakyer Festival. It is a vibrant celebration for the Effutu people.

The Friday before the hunt is exciting for Aboakyer. Two traditional groups parade through town: Tuafo (Number One) and Dentsifo (Number Two). They take turns to avoid clashes.

After parading, the Asafo groups prepare for the next day's hunt.

Before dawn, these groups venture into nearby game reserves. They are armed only with sticks and their bare hands to catch a live deer.

When they catch a deer, they send word to town. This sparks jubilation among the townspeople. As the sun rises, excitement builds at the durbar grounds.

The hunters return triumphantly with a live deer on their shoulders. Their arrival is met with joyous celebrations from everyone.

The captured deer is paraded through the streets. Drumming, dancing, and singing accompany this festive display.

Myjoyonline's photojournalist, Sammy Moore, joined the hunters at dawn. He captured striking moments from this sacred chase.
