Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has praised the Ghana cedi's strong performance. He called it a major shift in the country's economy.
Dr. Forson spoke at the swearing-in of the Ghana Gold Board members on May 19, 2025. He noted that the cedi appreciated by 16.7% against the US dollar as of May 13, 2025. This is a sharp turnaround from last year.
He stated, "The Ghana cedi has solidified its position as a standout performer." The cedi achieved a remarkable 16.7% appreciation year-to-date against the US dollar. This is a significant reversal from the 13.4% depreciation seen in 2024.
Dr. Forson credited this improvement to coordinated efforts between the Bank of Ghana and his ministry. He explained that this rally comes from a robust policy framework and synchronized measures.
The central bank has adopted strict monetary policies and aggressive liquidity sterilization. Dr. Forson expressed confidence that GoldBod would help sustain and enhance the cedi’s stability.
He said, "The activities of GoldBod will further strengthen this performance." He believes it will change how both the cedi and foreign exchange accumulation behave in the future.
