Renowned lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea has accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of hindering his ability to interrogate his clients. His clients are Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, and his wife, Angela Boateng.
Adu-Boahene was arrested on Thursday, March 20. His wife Angela was arrested the next day after visiting EOCO’s offices. Atta Akyea noted that a common thief would avoid such a situation. He emphasized that they have since been incarcerated.
In an interview on Citi Prime News, he explained that EOCO did not allow him to question his clients properly before their official interrogation. He stated he had access to them but needed to respect their constitutional rights. They have the right to counsel and the right to remain silent.
However, he claimed EOCO insisted that prosecutors be present during their discussions. He refused this condition as it violated lawyer-client confidentiality. “I told them, No, I will not do that,” he said.
Atta Akyea sought intervention from EOCO’s leadership but was unsuccessful. While waiting for assistance, the Attorney General held a press conference about the case. He expressed concern that the Attorney General was condemning his clients before they were proven guilty in court.
