Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has criticized the state’s decision to remand his client. He called it a “lottery” and a violation of due process.
Adu-Boahene was remanded into custody by a High Court in Accra on May 2, 2025. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) will hold him for seven days. This remand followed a request from Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Ayine cited intelligence suggesting Adu-Boahene tried to interfere with a key witness in an alleged stealing case. Atta Akyea condemned this approach during an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News. He accused the Attorney General of declaring his client guilty before investigations were complete.
“It is a lottery to say that if I don’t incarcerate a man, I can’t conclude my investigations,” Atta Akyea stated. He noted that the public narrative suggests suspects are already guilty. This leads to arbitrary detentions under the guise of gathering evidence.
“People are guilty in the public space already,” he added. He criticized the idea that Adu-Boahene could tamper with witnesses, insisting he has no influence over state security agencies.
“With what power is he going to interfere with witnesses?” he asked. Atta Akyea suggested that investigators want to credit Adu-Boahene with knowing their actions and plans.
He also questioned their timeline, saying it reflects poorly on their competence. “You’ve been around for such a long time,” he said, “and you are now trying to work.”
