Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has criticized his client's re-arrest. He called it unjustified since a court-ordered remand had expired.
Adu-Boahene faces charges of stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. He was initially remanded on May 2 for seven working days due to witness tampering allegations. After this period, he was briefly released but then re-arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking to reporters on May 13, Mr. Atta Akyea expressed frustration over the situation. He said it undermined due process. "The judge ordered his release on May 12," he noted.
Atta Akyea questioned why authorities did not address new matters during Adu-Boahene's brief freedom. He suggested that there might be motives behind keeping his client detained unjustly.
He stated, "Is someone excited about incarcerating another Ghanaian? That is unfortunate." Adu-Boahene has returned to EOCO, and Atta Akyea plans to investigate the new issue.
Atta Akyea argued that his client is not a flight risk. He emphasized that Adu-Boahene is already on substantial bail. "This seems like a personal vendetta," he claimed.
He added that even murderers can be granted bail in Ghana. The specifics of the new arrest are unclear at this time.
Previously, the Attorney General hinted at an investigation involving Adu-Boahene related to an internet connectivity case at Ghana Water Limited.
In the main case regarding GH₵49.1 million diversion, proceedings have been adjourned until May 26 for a case management conference. The state has filed all witness statements and will disclose them to the defense by May 20.
