Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion (CenPOA), Michael Donyina Mensah, has described the petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo as regrettable yet necessary.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio , he alleged that the Chief Justice had not demonstrated fairness and transparency in her role.

According to him, her handling of cases created a perception of bias, with politically sensitive cases under the previous government being expedited while others faced undue delays.

Mr. Donyina Mensah noted that the petitions were long anticipated and not surprising, adding that their submission aligns with concerns raised over the judiciary’s independence.

He also emphasized the need to avoid a cycle where each government seeks to remove judicial leaders perceived as politically aligned.

He urged President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a Chief Justice who is patriotic and independent, ensuring that future judicial leadership is free from political influence.

“The reset agenda should not just be about removing people, but about appointing leaders who genuinely have the national interest at heart,” he stated.

The presidency has commenced consultations with the Council of State regarding the petitions, with further developments expected in the coming days.
