The Auditor-General’s Recoveries Account, established in June 2022 to streamline the collection of disallowed unearned salaries and other recoverable funds, has accumulated GH¢31.5 million as of last month.
The amount has been transferred to the Consolidated Fund at the Bank of Ghana, reinforcing financial accountability.
Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu highlighted the account’s effectiveness in curbing financial malfeasance and ensuring compliance with surcharges.
Despite its success, challenges remain in enforcing recoveries and adjudicating cases.
Efforts are underway to amend surcharge laws for better implementation.
The initiative aims to enhance transparency, ensuring that misused public funds are recovered and reinvested in national development.
Over the past decade, public sector financial irregularities have cost Ghana GH¢99.57 billion, underscoring the need for stringent oversight.
