Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confirmed that authorities are following due process. This comes after concerns about how they handled drug trafficking claims against Assin South MP Rev John Ntim Fordjour.
In an interview on Joy FM's Middaynews, Afenyo-Markin shared updates from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). They agreed to use legal and parliamentary protocols for this matter.
He stated, “A letter has been sent to the Speaker’s office. The known procedure will be followed.” He emphasized that due process is essential for fairness and justice in investigations.
Afenyo-Markin cautioned that those in power today may need legal protection later. He urged his colleagues to respect due process, saying, “One day, you may be out of power.”
He explained that the Minority leadership was concerned about initial handling of the case. There were alleged attempts to arrest the MP without following proper procedures.
However, he clarified there was no issue of resisting arrest. Instead, they called for adherence to correct procedures. After discussions with authorities, they agreed to follow constitutional processes for dealing with a sitting MP.
The Minority has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament regarding this issue. All eyes are now on the Speaker’s office to act according to parliamentary procedure.
“It is not a matter of resisting arrest,” he reiterated. “We were concerned about following the law and protocols.” Authorities have now initiated due process as agreed upon during their engagement.
