Awulae Attribrukusu charges gov’t to mete out stiffer punishment to galamsey offenders

Awulae Attibrukusu III, Omanhene of Lower Axim

Awulae Attibrukusu III is the Paramount Chief of Lower Axim. He has urged the government to punish illegal miners, known as ‘galamsey’ operators. This action would deter others from harming the environment.

He also called for a review of laws on illegal mining. This review aims to protect the country’s rivers and forests.

During a recent Traditional Council meeting in Axim, he spoke to the media. He advised the government to establish special courts for quick prosecution of galamsey offenders.

The chief expressed concern about some politicians and chiefs involved in galamsey. He urged the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the President to discourage this behavior.

He warned chiefs under his jurisdiction against illegal mining. Those who continue could face arrest, prosecution, or dethronement. He made it clear that he would not support any sub-chiefs arrested for illegal mining.

Awulae Attibrukusu III reminded traditional rulers about potential consequences of galamsey involvement. Any chief found guilty should expect to be dethroned.

He questioned why chiefs allow excavators to enter their lands illegally. The paramount chief asked his subordinates to assist in fighting galamsey's harmful effects on rivers and forests.

He emphasized that traditional rulers should lead efforts against galamsey activities. He cited deformities in babies, premature deaths, and agricultural land destruction as reasons for this fight.

Awulae Attibrukusu III praised Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah for his initiatives against galamsey.

He believes that with political will and support from traditional leaders, galamsey could soon end.
