Awulae Attribrukusu charges gov’t to mete out stiffer punishment to galamsey offenders

Awulae Attibrukusu III, Omanhene of Lower Axim

Awulae Attibrukusu III is the Paramount Chief of Lower Axim. He has urged the government to punish illegal miners, known as ‘galamsey’ operators. This action would deter others from harming the environment.

He also called on the Mahama government to review laws on illegal mining. This review aims to protect the country’s rivers and forests.

During a recent Traditional Council meeting in Axim, he spoke to the media. He advised the government to establish special courts for quick prosecution of galamsey offenders.

The chief expressed concern about politicians and chiefs involved in galamsey. He asked the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the President to discourage this behavior.

He warned chiefs under his jurisdiction against illegal mining. Those who continue could face arrest, prosecution, or dethronement. He made it clear that he would not support sub-chiefs arrested for illegal mining.

Awulae Attibrukusu III reminded traditional rulers about potential consequences for engaging in galamsey. Any chief found guilty should expect to be dethroned.

He questioned why chiefs allow excavators to be smuggled into their areas for galamsey activities. The paramount chief urged his subordinates to assist the government in fighting galamsey.

He highlighted its devastating effects on rivers and forests. Traditional rulers should act as guardians against these activities.

He cited deformities in babies and premature deaths as reasons to win this battle against galamsey.

Awulae Attibrukusu III praised Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, for his efforts against illegal mining.

The Paramount Chief believes that with political will and support from traditional leaders, galamsey could soon end.
