Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, praised Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. He commended him for acting quickly to protect Ghana’s image. This follows the closure of Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C.
The Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, filed a motion. She requested the Foreign Affairs Minister explain the embassy's closure. She called it a reckless and non-transparent decision.
At a press briefing, Ms. Appiagyei expressed her concerns. She described the move as abrupt and poorly communicated. In her view, it undermines diplomatic priorities and public accountability.
The embassy's temporary closure was linked to alleged corruption involving local staff. In response, Minister Ablakwa acted swiftly to protect Ghana’s reputation. He signaled zero tolerance for corruption.
Mr. Ayariga defended the minister's actions as necessary and timely. He stated that quick measures are sometimes needed to redeem the country’s image. “I commend the Minister for his swiftness and commitment,” he said.
He assured the public about consular services during this time. Mr. Ayariga noted that any disruption would be minimal—just one or two days. “It will not affect the services people need,” he added.
He concluded by urging Ghanaians to support anti-corruption efforts. “We should commend the minister for taking such action,” he said.
