BPS calls for dialogue on transportation of hazardous substances

Nana Yaw Akwada, the Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety, has called for wider stakeholder engagement. This is to address risks linked to transporting hazardous materials on Ghana’s roads.

His comments follow a proposal from Abraham Amaliba, Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA). Amaliba suggested banning the transport of dangerous substances like LPG and dynamite during nighttime.

He argued that moving these materials at night could lower accident risks. These accidents threaten lives, property, and the environment.

While acknowledging Amaliba's intent, Akwada described the proposed ban as unsustainable. He stated that safe transportation relies more on strong protocols than on timing.

Akwada emphasized the need for national dialogue with all relevant regulatory bodies. This includes the Environmental Protection Agency and the Minerals Commission.

He believes a neutral discussion can lead to a comprehensive policy framework. “If we can have that discussion, we wouldn’t worry about when these substances are moved,” he said.
