Security analyst Emmanuel Kotin has urged political parties to avoid politicizing peace efforts in Bawku. This comes after criticism aimed at Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Mr. Kotin defended the IGP’s recent comments during a visit to Bawku. Dr. Yohuno promised to prioritize local youth for police recruitment. This gesture aims to promote peace and trust in the troubled area.
Kotin noted that a simple question led to the IGP's response about hiring Bawku youths. The Minority held a press conference afterward, which he criticized as ineffective stunts.
He praised the IGP’s approach as culturally sensitive and diplomatic. “The IGP has elevated policing by considering cultural sensitivities,” he said.
In response to claims of ethnic bias, Kotin questioned the backlash against the IGP's comments. He clarified that his remarks included all youth from Bawku, regardless of ethnicity.
“When he mentioned youth, did he specify Kusasi or Mamprusi?” he asked. “They are all from Bawku.”
Kotin emphasized that not everything should be politicized, especially given the suffering in Bawku. He referenced past region-focused recruitment efforts in Ghana aimed at addressing historic marginalization.
“The people of Bawku have suffered due to this conflict,” he stated. He supported the IGP's call for peace and questioned what was wrong with it.
Kotin criticized the Minority’s recent press conference as premature political posturing. “It’s been just three months since they left office after eight years,” he pointed out.
He urged leaders from both sides to support ongoing peacebuilding efforts. He highlighted former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's unique position as a Mamprusi native.
“I hoped Dr. Bawumia would help foster peace-building,” Kotin said. “Now is the time for collaboration.”
He concluded by calling for respect towards traditional authorities like Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who are mediating in the conflict.
“I urge both NPP and NDC to consider the people of Bawku,” he stated. “Depoliticize tensions and let Otumfuo and his team work.”
During his visit, the IGP reiterated police commitment to restoring peace in Bawku and strengthening ties with local communities. Analysts believe this could enhance trust and cooperation in the region.
He spoke about these issues during an interview on Accra-based 3FM’s Hot Edition with Alfred Ocansey.
