The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has sworn in a new committee. This is the first-ever Committee on Security and Intelligence. It was established under Order 258 (4) of the new Standing Orders. These orders took effect in January 2024.
During the ceremony, the Speaker congratulated the committee members. He urged them to be diligent and discreet in their work. He highlighted the sensitive nature of security matters. This is important not just for Parliament but for the entire country.
The committee will oversee national security and intelligence issues. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings will chair it, with Oscar Ofori Larbi as vice chairman. Other members include Mahama Ayariga, Ernest Henry Norgbey, and Samuel Nartey George. Additional members are Bede Ziedeng, James Gyakye Quayson, Benjamin Narteh Ayiku, Alhassan Kobina Ghansah, Nicholas Amankwah, Joseph Tetteh Akuerteh, and Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor.
This is a significant milestone for parliamentary oversight in Ghana. It aims to strengthen security governance and intelligence monitoring. The committee will collaborate with key national security agencies to improve coordination and ensure safety across the country.
