Bagbin urges NHIS reform to ease burden on lupus patients

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for more investment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He wants to improve healthcare delivery for patients with lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

Mr. Bagbin stressed the need to include lupus care in the NHIS. Many patients face financial burdens due to high treatment costs. He made this statement during a meeting with the Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation on World Lupus Day.

World Lupus Day is observed on May 10 each year. At least five million people worldwide live with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. It can affect any part of the body, including skin, joints, heart, and kidneys.

World Lupus Day began in 2004 to raise awareness about the condition. The first proclamation was issued to show global concern for those affected by lupus. Ghana ratified this proclamation in 2017.

Mr. Bagbin believes that strengthening the NHIS will ease economic strain on patients. It would also improve access to essential medical care for those affected.

Emma Halm Danso is the Executive Director of the Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation. She agrees with Mr. Bagbin that lupus is often misunderstood and underdiagnosed in Ghana. Many patients experience misdiagnosis and delayed treatment, leading to serious health issues.

Halm Danso advocates for specialized lupus clinics and better public education about the disease. The Foundation also urges the government to include lupus medications under NHIS coverage. Current out-of-pocket expenses are too high for many patients.

The Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation is a registered non-profit organization. They aim to inspire hope in those affected by autoimmune diseases through advocacy and education. They provide support services like medical assistance for individuals facing these challenges.
