The Christian Council of Ghana has called for a decisive ban on illegal mining, or "galamsey," due to its devastating impact on the environment and communities.
Reverend Cyril Fayose, the Council's General Secretary, stressed the urgent need to protect Ghana's natural resources, especially water bodies and farmlands.
He advocated for either a total ban or a temporary moratorium on small-scale mining to reassess the situation.
Fayose suggested that, if a full ban isn't possible, small-scale mining should be community-owned to ensure more sustainable practices and better oversight.
