The Furniture and Wood Products Association of Ghana (FAWAG) has reassured the public. They say President John Mahama’s plan to ban wooden furniture in schools will not harm local producers.
On June 5, during World Environment Day, the president announced this plan. He aims to combat deforestation and promote environmental sustainability.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Christopher Dadzawa spoke for FAWAG. He is the Association’s Administrative Assistant. Dadzawa stated that the industry already uses alternatives like metal for school furniture.
He said, “Not at all—it won’t affect local furniture producers.” He noted that metal furniture has been part of the system for years. “About 20 years ago, my association introduced metal furniture to the government,” he added.
Dadzawa explained that producers will shift from wood to metal. This transition is familiar to many in the industry. “We are only going to replace wood with metal,” he said, emphasizing a focus on school furniture.
