‘Barbaric and Unlawful’: NPP slams NIB over arrest of Adenta Kumi

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is concerned about the arrest of Ababio Kumi. He is a party activist and former parliamentary candidate, known as Adenta Kumi.

NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua claims the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) violated Kumi's human rights. Kumi was arrested at dawn on Friday, May 23, 2025. He is currently detained at the NIB office in Kawokudi, Accra.

The reasons for his arrest are unclear. However, the NPP believes it relates to a petition he submitted earlier this week to President Nana Akufo-Addo. This petition calls for dissolving a committee investigating the Chief Justice's removal due to alleged misconduct.

Kodua spoke on Citi Prime News on May 23 about Kumi’s arrest. He expressed outrage over how it was handled. "We think it is linked to the petition," he stated.

He noted that Kumi has not received acknowledgment of his petition yet. Regardless of the motive, Kodua emphasized that Kumi’s rights were violated. "He still has a fundamental human right," he said.

Kodua criticized the manner of Kumi's arrest and detention. He insisted that due process must be followed in such cases.

He called for civil society organizations, media, and diplomats to condemn this act by a state institution. "This is an unlawful barbaric act," he declared.

He stressed that due process must be respected in all legal proceedings.
