Bawku: Ayariga condemns violence, backs Otumfuo’s peace efforts

Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, condemned recent violence in Bawku. Clashes between police and youth have led to injuries and fatalities. There was also an attack on his private residence.

In a statement from abroad, he expressed sympathy for those affected. He called for calm amid rising tensions over the ongoing Bawku conflict. “I learned about fatal encounters between police and youth,” he said.

Ayariga acknowledged the frustration among youth regarding the slow resolution of the conflict. He also noted concerns about some law enforcement officers' conduct. The NDC government is committed to justice and lasting peace.

He extended condolences to bereaved families and sympathies to the injured. Ayariga supports ongoing peace efforts mediated by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene. Key traditional authorities in the region back this process.

“I urge everyone to stay committed to the peace process,” he stated. The Overlord of Kusaug and Mamprugu are participating fully in these efforts.

The MP assured constituents of his commitment to resolving the dispute legally. “I remain resolute in finding a lasting resolution according to Ghana’s laws,” he said.

He dismissed a smear campaign against him on social media. Ayariga urged people to ignore lies spread by political opponents. “This campaign will not distract me; we will be vindicated,” he added.

Reaffirming his stance on the chieftaincy dispute, he said it has not changed over time. He agrees with Kusaug youth that another person cannot claim chief status in Bawku. However, he respects Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's authority to resolve this matter swiftly.

He advised law enforcement officers to exercise caution during these tense times.
