Bawku Crisis: Bawumia calls for cooperation for lasting peace

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for cooperation among all stakeholders. He seeks lasting peace in the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

The crisis between the Kusasis and Mamprusis has worsened recently. This escalation has resulted in several deaths in the area. The Asantehene is currently leading a mediation effort.

Speaking in Bolga, Upper East Region, on Monday, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep sadness over the conflict. He noted that it involves two factions who share common ties. He urged for a peaceful ceasefire.

"I feel so sad about this conflict and the killing of innocent people," he said. "Mamprusis and Kusasis are one people, and this should not be happening." He emphasized their shared language and intermarriage as signs of unity.

Dr. Bawumia also criticized politicians who exploit the conflict for personal gain. He condemned the politicization of the situation, calling it unfortunate.

"The politicization of the crisis in Bawku serves only parochial interests," he stated. "As politicians, we must avoid using chieftaincy issues for political gain."

He added that both major parties have engaged in this behavior, which is disingenuous. Dr. Bawumia expressed hope that the Asantehene's mediation team will restore peace to Bawku.

He urged all factions and stakeholders to support this mediation effort led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
