Bawku Crisis: Bawumia calls for cooperation with Asantehene-led mediation team for lasting peace

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for cooperation. He wants all stakeholders to support the mediation team led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Their goal is to achieve lasting peace in Bawku.

The conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis has escalated recently. This violence has resulted in several deaths in the area. In response, the Asantehene is leading a mediation effort.

Dr. Bawumia spoke in Bolga, Upper East Region, during the NPP's national “Thank You” tour on Monday. He expressed deep sadness over the ongoing conflict. He described it as unfortunate since both factions share many commonalities.

"I feel so sad about this conflict and the killing of innocent people," he said. "Mamprusis and Kusasis are one people; this should not be happening." He noted that they understand each other's language and have intermarried.

Dr. Bawumia criticized politicians who exploit the conflict for personal gain. He urged an end to politicizing the crisis in Bawku.

"The politicization of this crisis is very unfortunate," he stated. "Some do it for their own interests, not for peace."

He cautioned politicians against using chieftaincy issues for political gain, mentioning the NDC specifically.

"I pray that the mediation team led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will bring peace," he added. "I urge all factions and stakeholders to cooperate fully with them."
