The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, is committed to peace in Bawku. This follows recent violent clashes in the area.
In a press statement on April 11, Mr. Ayariga expressed condolences to bereaved families. He also sympathized with those injured in the conflict. His private residence in Bawku was nearly burned down during these events.
Currently on an official assignment abroad, Mr. Ayariga acknowledged youth frustration over the slow resolution of the conflict. He mentioned alleged misconduct by some law enforcement officers.
He reiterated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is dedicated to justice and sustainable peace in the region. “I understand the anger and frustration of the youth,” he stated.
Mr. Ayariga called on all parties to support the peace initiative led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. He noted that both Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and Nayiri Naa Bɔhagu Mahami Sheriga are actively involved in this process.
He urged constituents to unite behind these efforts for long-term peace. Additionally, Mr. Ayariga addressed a "smear campaign" against him on social media.
He claimed some individuals are trying to exploit the situation for political gain. “Kindly disregard the lies being told about me,” he said.
“The smear campaign will not distract me,” he added. He remains focused on resolving the conflict according to Ghana’s laws and judicial rulings.
