The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has dismissed calls for a state of emergency in Bawku. This follows recent violence in the area.
On April 10, there was a violent clash between security personnel and local youth. This confrontation reportedly led to multiple fatalities and injuries. The situation worsened when the home of MP Mahama Ayariga was allegedly set on fire.
In light of these tensions, some residents and stakeholders have urged the government to act. They believe a state of emergency could help restore calm. However, Minister Akamugri disagrees with this approach.
He stated that current conditions do not warrant such an intervention. “It has been referred to an eminent chief to handle,” he said.
He further explained that the violence is not ongoing or widespread. “It is an instance that sparks up issues but is brought under control,” he noted. “So, why will we declare a state of emergency?” he questioned.
