The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has clarified his recent comments. He suggested that youth in Bawku would be prioritized in police recruitment if they laid down their arms. This clarification comes after public backlash and media scrutiny. A video of his interaction with Bawku residents circulated online.
In a media address, the IGP explained his intention. He aimed to decentralize the recruitment process for inclusivity. This is especially important for people in remote and conflict-affected areas. Mr. Yohuno assured Bawku youth they could apply to the Ghana Police Service.
However, he emphasized that all applicants must follow standard recruitment procedures. He stated that his remarks did not imply preferential treatment or changes to established guidelines. "Many times we have recruitment centralized at the national headquarters," he said.
He noted this often prevents regional balance in recruitment. "I have seen that there is a desire to get the job done," he added. The IGP encouraged youth to put down their arms, highlighting past recruits from the area who have excelled as officers.
He reassured them: "Put down your weapons, and when it comes to recruitment, we will give you the advantage." He clarified that they would still go through the normal process. His statement aims to address concerns about misinterpretation regarding police recruitment integrity.
