Bawku conflict: Churches must play a role in silencing the guns - Dr Opuni-Frimpong

Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong is the Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa. He has urged the Christian community to help end the conflict in Bawku.

The conflict has recently escalated. It has resulted in the deaths of two police officers. Healthcare delivery in the area has also been affected.

On JoyNews AM Show, Dr. Opuni-Frimpong called this violence a national shame. He emphasized that people in Bawku are fellow Ghanaians, sharing a common heritage.

He appealed to churches and religious leaders nationwide, especially those in the south. He asked them to rise above ethnic divisions and support Bawku's residents.

“The people of Bawku are part of us; they are Ghanaians,” he said. “What is happening is a shame—the deaths and suffering.”

He urged everyone to move past ethnic labels like Kusasi and Mamprusi. “Let’s see them as people who deserve our love,” he added.

Dr. Opuni-Frimpong encouraged pastors and bishops from the south to visit Bawku. He praised Asantehene for his peace-building efforts and suggested religious leaders join him.

He proposed organizing peaceful marches in Bawku to show unity for peace. “We’ve reached a point where the guns must be silenced,” he insisted.
