The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, visited Bawku. He assured the Bawku Naba and residents that the police would remain neutral. This comes amid ongoing conflict in the area.
The IGP's visit followed clashes that resulted in a civilian death. Security personnel were injured, and property was damaged. He emphasized that the police do not take sides in conflicts.
"We aim to enforce the law and maintain order," he stated. The IGP spoke with traditional leaders, youth groups, and opinion leaders during his visit. He apologized for any mistakes made by security personnel.
He asked for forgiveness from the Bawku community. "As humans, we may falter; please forgive us," he said. He urged residents to accept them as allies working for peace.
The IGP encouraged reporting any misconduct by security personnel to him. He appealed to the youth to embrace peace and cooperate with security services.
Tensions began on April 9, 2025, over a chieftaincy conflict. One faction demanded women from the opposing side leave the market. This led to police intervention and misunderstandings between youth and officers.
One person died, and several others were injured, including a police officer. In retaliation, angry youth attacked a police barracks, setting it on fire. They also targeted a police vehicle and forced officers to evacuate.
Additionally, they attacked the homes of two local MPs: Mr Mahama Ayariga and Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba. The Bawku Naba thanked the IGP for his visit but requested fairness in operations for lasting peace.
