Bawku crisis: Bawumia calls for cooperation for lasting peace

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for cooperation among all stakeholders. He seeks lasting peace in the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

The crisis between the Kusasis and Mamprusis has worsened recently. This escalation has resulted in several deaths in the area. The Asantehene is currently leading a mediation effort.

Speaking in Bolga, Upper East Region, on Monday, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep sadness over the conflict. He noted that it involves two factions who share commonalities and called for a peaceful ceasefire.

"I feel so sad about this conflict and the killing of innocent people," he said. "Mamprusis and Kusasis are one people, and this should not be happening." He emphasized their shared language and intermarriage as reasons for unity.

Dr. Bawumia urged all stakeholders to support the Asantehene's mediation team. He criticized politicians who exploit the conflict for personal gain, calling for an end to its politicization.

"The politicization of the crisis in Bawku is very unfortunate," he stated. "Some people do that for their own interests, not for peace."

He cautioned politicians against using chieftaincy issues for political advantage. "The NDC have done it, and it is disingenuous," he added.

Dr. Bawumia expressed hope that the Asantehene's mediation team would restore peace in Bawku. He urged all factions and stakeholders to cooperate with them during this process.
