Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, has condemned a smear campaign against him. He stated that social media distractions will not stop his commitment to peace in Bawku.
His comments follow recent violent clashes between police and local youth. These clashes reportedly included an attempt to burn down his home.
On Friday, April 11, he issued a press statement while on official duty abroad. He expressed concern about the situation in his constituency.
Ayariga understands the anger of the youth regarding slow resolutions. He also mentioned misconduct by some law enforcement officers.
He extended condolences to families of those who lost their lives and sympathized with the injured.
Ayariga reaffirmed his support for ongoing peace efforts. He urged residents of Bawku and Kusaug to stay committed to mediation led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
He noted that both Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and Nayiri Naa Bɔhagu Mahami Sheriga are involved in peace talks.
“I assure the people of Bawku and Kusaug that I am committed to a lasting resolution,” he said. This resolution will follow Ghana's established laws and judicial decisions.
He urged the public to ignore politically motivated falsehoods. Ayariga emphasized that no defamation would distract him from his focus.
“The smear campaign on social media will not distract me,” he stated confidently. “In the end, we will be vindicated.”
