Bawku crisis: I won't be distracted by smear campaign on social media - Mahama Ayariga insists

Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, condemned a smear campaign against him on social media. He stated that such distractions will not stop his commitment to peace in Bawku.

His comments follow recent violent clashes between police and local youth. These clashes reportedly included an attempt to burn down his private residence.

In a statement released on Friday, April 11, Mr. Ayariga expressed concern about the situation in his constituency. He is currently out of the country on official business.

He understands the anger and frustration of the youth regarding the slow resolution of issues in Bawku and Kusaug. He also mentioned misconduct by some law enforcement officers.

Ayariga extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and sympathy to those injured. He reaffirmed his support for ongoing peace efforts led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He noted that both Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and Nayiri Naa Bɔhagu Mahami Sheriga are participating in peace talks.

“I assure the people of Bawku and Kusaug that I am committed to a lasting resolution,” he said. This resolution will follow Ghana's established laws and judicial decisions.

He urged the public to ignore politically motivated falsehoods. No amount of defamation will distract him from his focus.

“The smear campaign on social media will not distract me,” he added. “In the end, we will be vindicated.”
