Bawku crisis: IGP's recruitment comment out of place - Minority

The Minority has strongly criticized comments made by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno. They described his remarks during a visit to Bawku as “out of place.” They urged him to reconsider his statements.

At a press briefing on Friday, April 11, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh responded to the IGP’s claim. He suggested that youth who lay down their arms could be prioritized for recruitment into security services.

Annoh-Dompreh said this was the IGP's major public statement since his appointment. He called it an unfortunate remark, possibly made impulsively.

He emphasized that saying people would be recruited for laying down arms is inappropriate. He noted that such comments carry significant implications coming from the IGP.

He questioned what message this sends to others in the country. Would it imply that anyone can start a fight and then join security services?

The Minority also called on the government to take responsibility for the situation. Annoh-Dompreh recalled how current government members blamed past administrations for violence in Bawku.

He pointed out that they claimed peace occurs when they are in power. However, now that they are in power, conflict continues to escalate.

He stated that lives and properties are being lost under their watch. The NDC government must show responsibility, he added, calling the situation disappointing.

Annoh-Dompreh concluded by stating that the Minority will not seek political gain from this issue. Instead, they will pressure the government to act responsibly.

"We won’t make irresponsible statements or speak carelessly," he said. "We will ensure they fulfill their promises and bring lasting peace to Bawku."

Their focus remains on peace and security, protecting lives and properties in the region.
