Issifu Mahmoud, the MP for Binduri in the Upper East region, has raised concerns. He warned that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation efforts in Bawku may be at risk.
Mr. Mahmoud stated that insufficient military personnel could jeopardize the mediation process. He spoke on JoyNews Desk on Monday about growing security issues in Binduri. This district is heavily affected by the ongoing Bawku conflict.
He emphasized his calls for peace but noted that maintaining order is challenging. An adequate military presence is crucial for stability in the area.
“I have consistently called for calm,” he said. “I urge my constituents not to take the law into their own hands.” He also appealed to state security forces for better protection.
With his background in law enforcement and peacekeeping, Mr. Mahmoud expressed deep concern. He believes words alone will not resolve Binduri's volatile situation.
“Without enough military personnel deployed, Otumfuo’s peace mediation may fail,” he warned. The success of any mediation effort depends on stability on the ground.
A visible and effective military presence is necessary for progress. “In Binduri, expecting positive results from mediation will be difficult if instability continues,” he explained.
He stressed the need to secure the area and restore calm first. Immediate military intervention is urgent in Binduri and neighboring districts.
“This is my view regarding peace mediation if we don't deploy military,” he concluded. The Bawku conflict stems from longstanding ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, leading to casualties and displacement.
On April 13, three people were killed, including two young police officers.
