Tensions have flared again in Bawku, Upper East Region. One person died and two others were seriously injured after a violent clash on Wednesday afternoon.
The trouble started in the town’s marketplace. A disagreement quickly escalated into chaos. Reports indicate that one faction ordered women from the opposing side to leave the market. This led to a scuffle involving police officers trying to restore order.
Things turned violent when gunshots rang out. Some individuals allegedly fired at the police. The officers returned fire, resulting in one civilian's death and two critical injuries. This shootout heightened tensions in the area.
In retaliation, angry youth attacked the home of ACP Adamu Seidu, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander. They set his residence ablaze. It is unclear if anyone was inside during the attack.
The violence continued as a nearby police barracks was also targeted. Reports say that a police vehicle was set on fire there. Fearing further unrest, authorities evacuated personnel from the barracks.
