Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has dismissed claims about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Critics say Bawumia is trying to distance himself from the former NPP administration during his Thank You Tour.
Some public addresses by Dr. Bawumia have raised concerns. Critics suggest his tone indicates he wants to disassociate from unpopular decisions made under President Akufo-Addo, where he served as Vice President.
On Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Ahiagbah rejected these interpretations. He stated that Bawumia's message focuses on inclusiveness and collective responsibility. “I don’t think he is distancing himself,” Ahiagbah said.
He explained that Bawumia speaks from a collective standpoint. “There is no way Dr. Bawumia will distance himself because we are all together in that decision,” he added.
Ahiagbah emphasized that Dr. Bawumia played a key role in the administration. He continues to support its policies and achievements while presenting a vision for the future.
“If he made any attempts to distance himself, I would question it,” Ahiagbah noted. He called suggestions of evasion politically and logically flawed.
He also questioned what advantage distancing oneself from a collective record would bring. “What benefit would that bring to anybody?” he asked.
Ahiagbah’s defense comes as the NPP seeks to regroup after losing the 2024 elections. The Thank You Tour aims to reconnect with party members and rally support for the future.
