Bawumia To EOCO: Wontumi’s Right Must Be Respected

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's Call for Legal Adherence

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to follow the law. His comments relate to the arrest of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Wontumi. Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a Facebook post on May 28, 2025, Dr. Bawumia stated that EOCO must respect Wontumi’s constitutional rights. He emphasized that any deviation from legal principles could undermine public trust in the justice system.

Dr. Bawumia questioned the legality of Wontumi’s detention. He described the charges against him as “vague” and noted his whereabouts are unknown. He warned that ignoring constitutional principles would damage public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.

He stressed that no one is above the law in a democracy. All Ghanaians, regardless of status or political affiliation, deserve their rights. “Justice and due process are not optional,” he said, highlighting their importance for democracy.

Dr. Bawumia has been in contact with Wontumi’s legal team since his arrest. He praised them for their professionalism in protecting Wontumi's rights. He reaffirmed his commitment to democratic governance and institutional integrity.

“Ghana must be governed by law, not arbitrary power,” he added.

Background on Wontumi's Arrest

On May 26, 2025, Chairman Wontumi reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra with his legal counsel and party allies. This followed a failed attempt by security forces to arrest him in Kumasi.

After honoring CID's invitation, EOCO officials took him for further questioning on related issues. On May 27, he fell ill during interrogation and was rushed to a hospital.

His lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi confirmed this information to journalists late Tuesday evening. The arrest sparked protests from NPP supporters who demanded his release at EOCO premises.

The situation escalated, prompting military personnel to secure the area. Several NPP figures accused EOCO and the government of politically motivated actions against opposition members.
