Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the NPP Presidential Candidate for 2024. He recently discussed why the NPP lost the elections with party supporters.
During his Thank You Tour, which started on Saturday, he shared several reasons for the defeat. He noted that many factors upset both supporters and the general public.
Dr. Bawumia mentioned that some reasons were due to government actions and inactions. He said, "Many people have ascribed reasons why we lost." Some believe it was a spiritual issue, but he disagrees.
He pointed out specific issues like the rising cost of living and arrogance of power. "We faced high costs and refused to listen," he stated.
He emphasized that party members had asked for a reshuffle but it did not happen. The public opposed the e-levy, yet their concerns were ignored.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted that there are about 16 million mobile money users. Ignoring their preferences led to backlash against the party.
He also addressed pensioners during debt restructuring discussions. The party initially promised no haircut but later changed its stance, affecting around 800,000 bondholders.
These bondholders are mostly middle-class individuals with dependents who suffered from this decision.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia criticized the lack of support for youth programs like NABCO and afforestation initiatives. "We canceled NABCO and did not pay workers," he explained.
He also mentioned poor management of key projects in various regions and criticized the national cathedral project for its lack of progress despite significant funding.
Looking ahead, Dr. Bawumia urged all party members to unite and work hard to address these challenges as outlined by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee.
