Bawumia is not blaming Akufo-Addo for election 2024 defeat – Nana B defends

Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has responded to claims about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Some say Bawumia is blaming former President Akufo-Addo for the party's defeat in the December 2024 elections during his "Thank You Tour."

Nana B clarified that Dr. Bawumia is not solely blaming the previous administration. He emphasized that Bawumia has accepted his role in the government. “He kept using the word ‘we’ throughout his speeches,” Nana B stated.

Dr. Bawumia discussed issues like unpopular policies during his tour. These included the E-Levy, emission tax, and betting tax. Nana B noted that these criticisms were already acknowledged within the party.

“I have criticized some of these policies too,” he said. “These matters clearly affected our fortunes in 2024.”

During his tour on April 27, Dr. Bawumia listed reasons for their election defeat. He mentioned hardship in the country and arrogance from his government as key factors.

He also pointed out issues with debt restructuring and a lack of ministerial reshuffling. “The studies we conducted showed big complaints about cost of living and hardship,” he explained.

Dr. Bawumia added that they ignored party advice against implementing certain policies like the e-levy and debt restructuring program. He lamented, “For eight years we never listened.”

He highlighted promises made by the president regarding no haircut on debts but noted that this promise was broken later on. Additionally, he mentioned failures to pay various programs and complete important projects in regions where they received significant votes.

Overall, Dr. Bawumia’s remarks reflect a need for introspection within the NPP as they prepare for future elections.
