Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the Mamponghene's Palace in Asante Mampong. He came to express condolences for Daasebre Nana Osei Bonsu II's death. The late chief was the Paramount Chief of Mampong and held the Silver Stool.
Daasebre Nana Osei Bonsu II passed away at 86 years old on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. His death was kept private according to Asante custom. It was officially announced on Monday, April 28, after informing the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The late chief served as second-in-command to the Asantehene for over 25 years. He was respected as a traditional leader, economist, and lawyer.
On Friday, May 2, Dr. Bawumia paused his party’s regional Thank-You Tour for this visit. He offered condolences to the bereaved family and the Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II.
Dr. Bawumia signed a condolence book in honor of Daasebre. He described him as a father figure and a source of wisdom for himself and his wife, Samira.
“We are grateful to Nana for taking us in as his children,” he said during his visit.
Dr. Bawumia had a warm personal relationship with the late chief. He expressed shock at the news and shared an emotional tribute on social media soon after it was announced.
During his visit, he also met with the late chief’s widow. He thanked the Mampong Traditional Council for their warm reception and contributions to Asanteman.
The Queenmother and traditional leaders appreciated Dr. Bawumia’s gesture. They acknowledged the mutual respect between him and the late Mamponghene.
Daasebre Nana Osei Bonsu II's passing has caused mourning across Asanteman. Following tradition, the Silver Stool Palace is now locked up. The keys were handed to Gyaasehene Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsa by the Mamponghemaa.
A formal inspection of the palace will be conducted by the queenmother and her delegation soon.
Privately known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, Daasebre was an accomplished academic and administrator. Before becoming chief in 1999, he served as Registrar at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
