Bawumia’s Cambridge speech makes the case for digital Africa

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia spoke at the Cambridge Africa Business Conference. He made a strong case for a digitally empowered Africa.

Dr. Bawumia's speech was one of the most passionate of the day. He emphasized that digital transformation is vital for Africa’s development.

He highlighted Ghana’s digital journey, which has reduced inefficiencies in public administration. From digital land records to e-pharmacy systems, reforms have improved service delivery. These changes have also saved millions in public funds. “When you digitalize, you formalize,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia addressed financial exclusion among youth and informal sector workers. He explained how mobile technology has provided banking services to many unbanked Ghanaians. These innovations are crucial for building economic resilience against global shocks.

The former Vice President acknowledged existing challenges. He noted gaps in infrastructure and disparities in digital literacy. There is also a need for more investment in cybersecurity. However, he remained optimistic: “These are not roadblocks—they are simply hurdles to overcome.”

Dr. Bawumia concluded with an inspiring message: “Africa doesn’t need to catch up—it needs to leap forward.”
