Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia spoke at the Cambridge Africa Business Conference. He made a strong case for a digitally empowered Africa. Many called his address one of the most passionate of the day.
Dr. Bawumia explained that digital transformation is vital for Africa's development. He highlighted Ghana’s digital journey, which reduced inefficiencies in public administration. He mentioned reforms like digital land records and e-pharmacy systems. These improvements have saved millions in public funds.
“When you digitalise, you formalise,” he emphasized during his speech. Dr. Bawumia also addressed financial exclusion among youth and informal workers. He noted that mobile technology has provided banking services to many unbanked Ghanaians.
These innovations are crucial for building economic resilience against global shocks. However, he acknowledged existing challenges in infrastructure and digital literacy. He also pointed out the need for more investment in cybersecurity.
Despite these issues, Dr. Bawumia remained optimistic: “These are not roadblocks—they are simply hurdles to overcome.” His final message was a rallying cry: “Africa doesn’t need to catch up—it needs to leap forward.”
