Bawumia urges calm as confusion grows over Wontumi’s whereabouts

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP's 2024 flagbearer, has called for calm. This follows confusion about the location of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

On May 30, Dr. Bawumia and other senior NPP leaders visited the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra. They aimed to meet bail conditions for Wontumi. However, NIB officials informed them that Wontumi was not there. He was actually in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

This situation has increased tension among party supporters. Reports suggested that Wontumi had been transferred to the NIB earlier that day.

Speaking to journalists on May 30, Dr. Bawumia urged supporters to stay peaceful. He said they should allow the legal process to unfold. "I believe this was just set to prevent his release," he stated.

He assured supporters they would follow legal procedures for Wontumi's release. "Please remain calm as we work behind the scenes," he added. Dr. Bawumia expressed disappointment at not being able to see Wontumi.

He emphasized the importance of following due process for a safe release.
