Clement Akapame, a private legal practitioner and Catholic Church member, is hopeful. He believes the new Pope will be a unifying moral voice on global issues.
His comments followed the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XVI. The announcement was marked by white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney in Vatican City.
The election involved 133 cardinals from around the world. They met in a secret conclave, isolated from outside communication, to choose the new leader of the Catholic Church. This church has over 1.4 billion followers globally.
In an interview on News Feed with Charles Owusu-Kumi, Akapame stressed the Pope’s role during these divisive times. He said, “We expect him to be a key conscience on geopolitical issues.”
Akapame hopes the new Pope will act as a unifying force for peace. He emphasized this expectation as he takes on his role as head of state for Vatican City.
