Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has called for more transparency from Energy Minister John Jinapor. He wants the public to be informed about challenges in the energy sector.
The Ministry recently revealed it needs GH₵1.1 billion urgently. This funding is necessary to procure liquid fuel for power generation. Current fuel reserves are expected to last only 2.6 days.
The energy sector faces a larger issue with a GH₵2 billion monthly deficit. This deficit is mainly due to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) revenue collection problems.
On Eyewitness News, Nana Amoasi VII expressed understanding of the Minister's intentions. However, he stressed that consumers deserve honesty about sector inefficiencies.
He stated, “We have a huge challenge in the sector.” He believes consumers cannot expect stable power until ECG's issues are resolved.
Amoasi urged the Minister to acknowledge these problems and ask for time to fix them. He emphasized the need for a sustainable financial structure in the energy sector.
All stakeholders must be compensated fairly, including fuel suppliers and power generators. “We should have enough money to pay everyone involved,” he said.
