Betting is leisure, not livelihood – DACF Administrator cautions youth

Michael Harry Yamson is the Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). He has warned young Ghanaians not to view betting as a source of income. He emphasized that betting should be seen as entertainment, not a way to make a living.

His comments follow criticism from civil society groups and religious organizations. They are concerned about the government's decision to remove taxes on betting winnings. Critics believe this could lead to increased gambling among youth.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Yamson explained the tax removal's purpose. He said it aims to boost the betting sector's economic contribution, not encourage reckless behavior. "The betting tax was seen as frustrating an industry," he stated.

He added that they want to promote economic activity in this sector. However, he stressed that betting should remain a leisure activity. It should never become someone's main source of income.

Mr. Yamson also called on betting operators to enforce laws against underage gambling. He noted that minors accessing gambling platforms is a significant concern. “We encourage people to follow the law,” he said.

He mentioned that the government will work with tech stakeholders on digital safety measures. This includes using the Ghana Card to prevent underage online betting access. "We need mechanisms like the Ghana Card," he explained, "to stop young people from accessing these sites."
