Police in Bimbilla, Northern Region, have started a new enforcement exercise. This aims to ensure compliance with the directive for a 15% reduction in transport fares.
The initiative follows resistance from some commercial drivers. These drivers have ignored the directive from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). The fare reduction was announced due to the rising value of the Ghanaian cedi and falling fuel prices. It aims to ease financial burdens on commuters.
On Wednesday, May 28, officers led by the Municipal Crime Officer visited major transport terminals. They monitored compliance levels among drivers in Bimbilla.
This operation comes after some drivers openly refused to lower fares. They cited their own economic challenges as reasons for non-compliance. While some operators have followed the directive, many still charge old fares.
Authorities plan to continue enforcement efforts throughout the municipality. Their goal is to ensure full compliance and protect passengers' interests.
